Arctic Adventure - 10 to 31 May 2018 Part 6 Story by Margaret Campbell
Bergen and Oslo
The
next two and a half days were spent leisurely cruising along the
stunning coastline, unfortunately the first morning was very misty and
we missed seeing the Svartisen glacier and the Arctic Circle marker
but we did have magnificent views of Torghatten, the mountain with the
hole through the middle, interesting bridges and of course Kristiansund and Trondheim from the sea.
There
are many other points of interest along the way, too numerous to
mention but well worth a visit to see. The ship travels through some
very narrow channels where you could almost touch the shore on both
sides and it is fascinating to see just how steeply the rocks enter the
water.
Arriving
back in Bergen suitably fed, watered and rested we disembark the same
way with passengers and luggage going off separately from the car and
drivers.
All safely reunited we made our way back to the Magic
hotel, where we stayed on our way north, for a two night stay allowing
for a day to explore.
Leaving the hotel the next morning we headed for the tram station LægreidOnwards and northwards as the weather started to improve and round the corner to see some wild reindeer casually grazing beside the road, how lucky. The road to the North, the E6, is undergoing a major realignment and as a result the roadworks were very evident but did not really interfere with our travel. Arriving in Bodø we found our hotel and did some rearranging of luggage etc. for the following day.and
into the centre of Bergen. We took a city tour bus to make the most of
our day and stopped off to travel up the funicular railway for a
magnificent view of the city. Upon returning to the centre we walked
all around the Bryggen area marvelling at the old wooden houses, which
are shown on virtually every photo you will see of Bergen where we sat
with an ice cream.
We also visited The Magic Ice Bar which had
three dimensional paintings by Munch and Klimt within the ice. Ranald
& Louise had a very full day as they decided to take in as many
museums and galleries as time would allow.
Leaving
Bergen the next morning we headed virtually due east partially
retracing our steps from day 3. After passing the ferry terminal at
Kvanndal we were on new roads again.
Following alongside the
Granvinfjorden to Eide we then entered the Vallavik tunnel to Vallavik.
The tunnel is 4.67 miles long and has a roundabout within it close to
the southern end which connects it to the Hardanger bridge, the longest
suspension bridge in Norway crossing the Hardangerfjorden.
Continuing
eastward we found a nice spot for our picnic where we could see the
opening of the next tunnel, this was unusual in the fact that it was
almost a complete spiral to take us to the top of the hill and back out
above the snow line. We stopped at Dyrenut for some photos before
continuing on to our overnight stop in Gol.
