Arctic Adventure  -  10 to 31 May 2018  Part 5
Story by Margaret Campbell

Next morning we had one of the best breakfasts of the tour then went for a short walk around Bodø checking out of hotel around midday. We drove back south to visit the Saltstraumen which is a small straight with one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. The channel connects the outer Saltfjorden to the large Skjerstad Fjord between the islands of Straumøya and Knaplundsøya and whirlpools of up to 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep are formed when the current is at its strongest.

The weather was now beginning to close in again as we drove back through Bodø and on a bit further north to the ferry at Festvåg where we saw dolphins but they were too quick for us to get a decent photo. We eventually returned to Bodø and back to the hotel where we had a late dinner, trying to waste time as the Hurtigruten was not due to arrive until 2.30am and we were to board about 3.30am for departure at 4.15.

The Hurtigruten (Express Route) ships ply the coast of Norway from Bergen to Kirkenes. They are cruise ships, ferries and cargo operators and have been described as the World’s most beautiful sea voyage.

We arrived at the terminal just after 11pm and tried to have a wee sleep in our cars while waiting in the heavy horizontal  rain.

Eventually our ship MS NordNorge docked and we were allowed to board. Boarding was not like a normal ferry, only the drivers were allowed on with the car, all passengers had to board with luggage by the gangway.

The cars were loaded one at a time onto a lift which took them into the hold and the keys are handed to the crew so they can manoeuvre them as required for
loading and unloading at other ports.

Safely aboard we all made our way to our cabins so we could have some sleep, we were underway before we slept. Up early the next morning to explore and watch the next docking, unloading and loading we then made our way for breakfast.
