RSAC Spring Run - 6 April 2025
story Jim Paterson photos Andy Thomlinson & Jim Paterson
Around 50 cars from across the ages met up at Nuffield Health and
wellbeing facility in Milngavie on Sunday 6 April, under unbroken blue
skies and wall to wall sunshine. I arrived with my better half Rona to
help organiser Ian Higgins and Jonathan Lord with signing on and
Concours judging. This was our first time at this event and venue, and
it was great to meet old friends and chat to new crews as they
arrived.
This year the vintage and veteran enjoyed free entries into class 1, to
encourage these elderly cars out on to the highway. They had a choice
of a long route c100 miles or a shorter run c40 miles.

The 1913 Darracq TT13 arrived with the Meek family at the helm. The car
has been in the family since new, originally the local doctor Meek's
car, but now a family heirloom used on high days and classic tours and
shows. No less than three Aston Martins in the class Roger Martin in a
1930 International. This would suffer brake issues on route when the
rear offside drum struck the backplate seizing the brake and
overheating the drum. Help was not far away, as Jim Campbell in
his 1932 New International model assisted using technique and brute
strength to release the drum. Jim's car is off to Spain on tour soon,
but has seen extensive restoration since being purchased as one might
say as a box of bits in a dilapidated state. His efforts were
rewarded with first in class 1 award at the finish. Simon and Tom
Graham
drove their 1936 Speed Model Aston completing the triple.

Bill & Colin McCreath arrived in a brilliant blue 1934 Alvis Speed
20 tourer, sparkling in the morning sunshine. Nigel Kelly brought
his 1936 Austin L12/4 New Ascot to complete the class.
A collection of MG's from various era's covering several MGB,
MGF, MGTF and Midget graced the entry. Morris Minor convertible and
Healey 3000 joined other roadsters with tops down for the day.
Triumph not outdone with Bill & Val Pollock in their outstanding 1957 TR3, Alan Brisbane TR6, and the Ferguson Dolomite
Sprint flying the marque's flag
Jaguar too had a great showing, with a MK2 E-Type and more modern
XK and XKR versions on display. Big cruisers came in the shape
of 1988 Bentley Mulsanne with the glen family, a 1995 Bentley Turbo R
with Russell Meek at the wheel, and 1996 rolls Royce Silver
Spirit driven by Annette MacMillan.

The Long Route (106 miles)
Turning right out of the Nuffield start facility the crews headed north
to Strathblane, where the long route turned east toward Lennoxtown on
the A891, alongside the Campsie hills. Through Lennoxtown before taking
a left on to the B822, otherwise known as the famous Crow Road. This
great road took us over the Campsies to the Gonnachan cottage where we
left the Crow Road onto the B818 heading east again, this time toward
Denny, passing through the magnificent Carron Valley, along side the
reservoir. At Carron Bridge we turned left toward Stirling,
opposite the Tak-me-Doon road, taking us past
Loch Coulter A sharp eye needed, not only to avoid
potholes, but also to catch the TL to the North Third Trout Fishery,
the sign facing the other way!
Great views across the North Third Reservoir as we approached
Cambusbarron, near Stirling. This took us on to the A811 Stirling to
Loch Lomond road. We left the main drag at the Kippen Station
roundabout on to the B822 northbound toward and through Thornhil,
leaving on the A873. We kept going through Ruskie and Blairhoyle to
Port of Monteith. Now on the A81 we continued to Aberfoyle, where we
headed up the A821 Duke's Pass on the Three Lochs Forest Drive, around
Loch Achray and the shoreside of Loch Venacher toward the A84 into
Callander.
Picking up the A81 south we headed back toward Aberfoyle, completing
the circle, but this time staying on the A81 toward Glasgow, turning
left onto B835 to Buchlyvie.and the A811 again, as far as Amprior.
South to Fintry, then Killearn on the B818, then A875 and A81 taking us
through Strathblane and the finish back at Nuffield Health and
Wellbeing.
