just how popular this form of
motorsport is becoming across the country. The CCHMSC stand had
Graeme Henderson's Austin Healey 3000 works replica
in pride of place under the illuminated Start Banner. The cars
were built by the Competitions Department at
Abingdon for the 1964 season, and driven by Rauno Aaltonen to 1st
Overall on the Liege-Sofia-Liege, and also finished the RAC Rally
driven by the Morley brothers. This works replica is in
immaculate condition and never fails to draw young and old to have a
look inside.
Chris Donnachie brought one of Triumphs best cars, the Michelotti designed
TR4 which was a radical move away from the previous TR2 and TR3
shape, though the chassis and drivetrain was the same as the
previous TR sports cars.
Liz Swan brought her Renault 8 saloon along, with co-driver
Suzanne Mitchell also appearing for the fun. As well as bringing
some of the family the pair also brought their dresses of the
period which won them best dressed crew on the recent Argyll Run

March. Based on the Renault Dauphine, the R8 was released in July
1962, and the Gordini, which was originally always in blue, appeared
in 1964.
Finally Raymond Rollo displayed his recently completed Ford Mk1
Capri V6. Arguably the best Capri that Ford ever made. This example
has had many hours spent restoring a rather rust eaten shell back to
life. The engine however was in sound condition and with only about
75000 miles under its belt should offer many more miles before
needing attention. That's if Raymond doesn't thrash the car, which
is certainly not a given!!!
Our
colleagues from Friends of the Rest were also in attendance, making
many more "friends" during the day as well as securing yet more
sales for their DVD covering hillclimbs on the rest during the glory
days of the fifties. George Cooper brought his famous Cooper (no
relation) which has seen many races across Europe since he rebuilt
the car following a garage fire which reduced the car to a shell,
including a run round the Nurburgring by George himself. 2009 should
see the start of the Friends of the Rest works parties, repairing
the route to allow Classic Cars from across the country and perhaps
a few international classics as well, relive those heady hillclimbs
of the fifties and sixties.
The
Saltire, Highland, Stonehaven and Berwick Clubs also sported a wide
range of cars, as did some of the one make clubs such as the
Caterham, Bentley, Jaguar and Mini marques, the latter celebrating
50 years of their favourite car. For motorsport on a shoestring you
can't get better than Edinburgh University with their autotest
special. As you can see it really is a way to sharpen your welding
and cutting skills while having a bit of fun at the same time
without spending a fortune.
We ended the day tired but having enjoyed the chats with the many
enthusiasts, and in some cases real anoracks on their favourite
marque.
Anything that raises the profile of Motorsport is a good thing
and hopefully this annual event is now established in the calendar
and will be around next year.If it is we will be there.
Well worth a visit
