Great North Winter Challenge 2010 - Cancelled
Extreme
snow and ice weather conditions in the north of Scotland, which show no
signs of abating, have led the organisers to decide to cancel the GNWC
Rally on both access and safety grounds.
"Our team in the
highlands who are helping with the organisation of the event report
severe
conditions, with many of the proposed roads and alternatives, blocked
with snow, or covered in hard packed snow and ice. Test sites are in
some cases under 24 inches (610mm) of snow" reported organiser Douglas
Anderson. Our event joins an ever increasing number of
January motorsport events to be cancelled, e.g. Hawick and Border Car
Club's Hangover Autotest, and Berwick and District's Johnson Trophy.
Whilst some are postponing, CCHMSC feel that the level of snow on the
remote roads proposed for the GNWC will take a long time to clear given
the extremely low temperatures, -16 degrees reported
regularly across the Highlands. Our
apologies to all who were looking forward to the event, but safety must
take priority, and with the forecast for more snow and continued low
temperatures, we hope you agree that we have made the right decision.
