David Sharp Funeral - 21 November Report by Jim Paterson
The
Melrose crematorium was filled with motorsporting personalities from
across the country on Thursday 21st November for the celebration of
David Sharp's life. Some 200 attended with many standing in the small
crematorium, only recently opened this year. We heard of David's
active life involving cars, motorsport and his timing expertise
David,
born and brought up in Melrose found an interest in cars at a very
early age and soon started buying and restoring old vehicles, causing
neighbours and friends to wonder what he was going to do with some of
the delapidated examples he would turn up with. His pride and joy
was his Lotus Elan which he spent many hours restoring to perfect
condition. He would often be seen in the summer months driving the car
around the borders, and attending classic car shows.
After his marriage to Joanne, following his time of National Service,
his working life took him to Tanzania where son Alan was born. By the
sixties he was back in Galasheils and Ian was born, both who have
joined the motorsport timing team of S.M.A.R.T, which has been at many
race and rally meetings across the country.
His
knowledge of most things mechanical served him well in his teaching
career in the borders colleges and he worked closely with the MSA
to develop the Timekeeper role.
David always had a wealth of
stories that were both informative and often very amusing, something I
enjoyed when we were together be it on the Border Counties Rally or other
events and get togethers.
David will be sorely missed and we
hope son's Ian and Alan carry on their father's tradition and keep the
Sharp name at the forefront of motorsport timing.
The Club extended its condolences to Joanne, Alan and Ian and the family at this sad time.
