Biggar Rally - Sunday 11 August
Report and photos  by Jim Paterson

The showers were frequent and heavy on the way to Biggar in the Sprite for the annual show of classic and historic vehicles but I used the old rule when driving an open car; when it rains drive faster!  That worked for most of the time until I came up behind a queue following the proverbial sporting drivers nightmare, the caravan!!! Now 30 to 40 mph is not quite fast enugh to keep dry, and nobody would attempt an overtake.

Arriving in the dry, but with me rather damp I parked up in the show field just north of Biggar. Every type of vehicle was on display. If it had 2, 3, 4, or more wheels it was on display. From classic motorcycles to multiwheel Albion trucks and buses, the show had them all.

Riley were well represented and I think Gordon McAllan of the Scottish Riley Enthusiasts Club would have been around somewhere. I look forward to his next newsletter when all will be revealed. Ford too with their range of Cortina's, Zodiacs, Anglia, Prefect and even a 1962 Taunus 12M.

The British car industry of yesteryear was well represented with a great collection of 'Moggies' in all shape and forms, vans, saloons, traveller, and pickups. Older Austin 8's and 10's were alongside real 'Mini's which wre joined by Triumph, including a magnificent Gloria, and Jowett.

Other favourites included Volvo P1800's, Lagonda, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Bristol. From across the pond we saw Chevrolet, and Mercury giants from the 40's and 50's with tail fins that looked like they would flip the car if a strong gust came along!

Two wheels were well represented, and three wheels had to be a selection of Morgan cars, with an unusual  barrel back in the line-up.

Plenty of commercial Albion trucks and buses, some being housed at the local Albion museum in Biggar. Tractors joined the display, and autojumble stalls seemed to have something for every classic owner.

By time I was on the far side of the show field the rain showers caught up with me and then I remembered that the Sprite top was still down! A rather damp seat for the drive home but still a great day out to see some interesting classic vehicles.
