Arrochar Alps Challenge - 26 October 2013
Report by Tom Niven, Photos Alan Duncan

Despite the unfavourable weather forecast the entrants to the Arrochar Alps Challenge and the Arrochar Cup were greeted with clear skies and dry weather when they gathered at The Pit Stop in Arrochar on Sat. 26th to sign on for the day`s events.

A total of 25 crews signed on with many familiar and some new faces. The entrants came from far and wide – many having a very early start to join us. We were pleased to welcome David and Matthew Alexander from the Newcastle area again – shows the popularity of our events.

After refreshments and the drivers briefing the crews set off to compete for the Arrochar Cup which consisted of two rounds of autotests at the foot of the Rest and Be Thankful (including two non competitive runs up the Rest).

Unfortunately we lost the MGB V8 of James Rae/Will Moffat before the tests due to a suspected faulty water pump and the MGA Coupe of Donald Brown/John Gastall during the test ( this crew had already  replaced their original Lotus 7 with the MG due to an unfortunate incident). Hopefully both crews will be back in action shortly.

The autotest showed the contrast between the  performance of the Hillman Imp (Gauld/Gauld) and the Vauxhall Chevette(Glendinning/Glendinning) compared to the stately progress of Chris Noble`s 1926 Bentley ( 87 years old). However everyone enjoyed themselves – this is what it is all about!

After the autotest the crews carried on to the Auto Distance event which took them over 100 plus miles of interesting roads round the Cowal Peninsula and Argyle`s hidden coast .By all accounts everyone thoroughly enjoyed the route.

The day concluded at The Pit Stop in Arrochar. Unfortunately by this time the weather had deteriorated and heavy rain was the order of the day but spirits were not dampened. The Pit Stop provided excellent food and after the prize giving the crews departed for an extremely wet drive home.

Thanks to the Marshalls who gave up their time to make the event possible. Look forward to seeing everyone again soon.
